Audi History

Founded in 1899 by August Horch under the original name “Horch & Cie.”, what would later become the Audi brand, was Horch’s first automobile company. Shortly after, in 1909 Horch set up a new company in Zwickau called Audiwerke AG, Zwickau. This is where the modern company gets its name from.

Audi’s four-ringed logo comes from the merger of four main automobile manufacturers in Saxony Germany that would later become united under Auto Union AG, or AUDI’s AG. Those historic companies included Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer.

After the second world war, the united Auto Union AG’s was in a location occupied by Soviet Forces who had the company removed from the Commercial Register of the city of Chemnitz in 1948. In 1949, Audi established a new company in Ingolstadt called Auto Union GmbH.

In 1971, the revolutionary NSU Ro 80, an advanced four-door, front-engine executive sedan inspired the new advertising slogan that would continue to be used by the Audi Brand. “Vorsprung durch Technik”, meaning “Advancement through Technology” continues to be the Audi brand’s guiding principle.

In 1980, the Audi quattro made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The legendary four-wheel-drive traction system offers incredible performance and two manually lockable differentials ideal for dealing with smooth and slick surfaces.

Since then, the Audi brand has defined milestones in the automotive industry. With advancements like fully galvanized bodies, best in its class aerodynamic volume-built saloon, the wide use of turbocharged petrol engines, the creation of economical direct-injection diesel engines, the aluminum body, and the first hybrid vehicles ever made, Audi continues to surpass its competitors in terms of innovation and technological advancement.
